Taking Joomla! to the students
The strength of an open source software is the number of developers and end users that use it. We have been working with Joomla! for over four years since its 1.0.x days and have participaated in its journey to where it is today. As a developer community, Winnou, has used Joomla is most of its product and portal development initiatives. We also realized that the talent pool that is readily available to work on Joomla based projects is limited.
In order to address this problem and also to increase the awareness of Joomla and its capabilities, Winnou has been conducting free workshops for students at local engineering colleges. The purpose of these workshops is to show computer science students that there is a world beyond Java and .NET. Joomla! which is built on open source technologies such as PHP and MySQL is just as good, if not better, when it comes to building websites and portals that attract high traffic. Till date over 800 students have participated in such workshops. Many of our fresh recruits have also come from this pool of students who have attended our workshops.
In addition to the 3 hour workshops, we have developed a 2 week course based on Joomla! This course is designed in such a way that by the end of this course a student would have developed a web portal on their own. Prerequsite for this course is an essential knowledge of HTML and some database skills. Starting with Joomla installation, the course walks through process of template building, CSS, AJAX, PHP, MySQL, custom development of extensions, modules and components for Joomla. This is a super duper 2 week period that puts the students through a steep learning curve.
